As we are using heavy duty custom gears we can tune your gearbox to whatever engine you decide to put in whether it be TDI or PD , Subaru, 2.5 WBX or even stock VW engines. As most modern engine conversions have different rev ranges and  are also more powerful and  torquier than the original engines. To get the most from your engine it and also to protect the gearbox from future damage it is necessary to get your gearbox rebuilt. Any weaknesses in your gearbox will be exposed by the increase in power and torque. With GT gears we can re-gear your gearbox to make the optimum use of your engine, ratios will depend on your tyre size and also the final drive of your gearbox. more info below

GT gears are considered to be the best in the business.

“Guard Transmission utilizes the most advanced and modernized CNC gear-cutting equipment available. All of our gears are cut with class AA grade gear hobs and feature the latest F1 gear profiles. Contact pressure angles are optimized for maximum strength and each gear tooth has a very prominent “tip relief” placing all contact directly in the centre of the tooth. This special feature eliminates any premature wear found in all prior gear designs., which typically occurs at the base and tip of each gear tooth.

All gears offered by Guard Transmissions are shot-peened to Aircraft specifications, which normally doubles the service life (in medium stress applications) and are also REM polished as standard.

REM Surface Engineering, ISF, or “Isotropic Superfinish”, is a polishing treatment for machined metal components that eliminates the imperfections left over by the machining process. In very simplified terms, the “peaks” left on metal parts by various manufacturing processes are removed using vibratory equipment in conjunction with patented solutions to speed up the process.

The Build

The service replaces your mainshaft 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th gears plus the synchronisers with the best quality parts. It also involves  the replacement of all common wear items and some upgrades to rectify known faults. We rebuild gearboxes to the original VW factory tolerances, to do that it is necessary to replace all the consumable wear items, i.e. bearings, seals, and bushes. We also replace single-use parts such as circlips as per the factory rebuild procedure and replace the synchro rings. All bearing preloads and backlash is measured meticulously, and the box is set up accordingly. Our aim is to restore your box to as close to new as possible or even stronger than new with some upgrades.

If your gearbox is broken it will need this service plus whatever components replacing that are not covered here. If you are wishing to upgrade your box to accommodate and engine conversion you will also need this service plus whatever parts you require.

Until we inspect your box it is very hard to give you a more accurate quote on what it needs. Upon receipt of your service booking fee, we shall supply you with shipping instructions on how to send your gearbox to us. We have currently secured very low prices from our courier company for shipping .

Usually, within two weeks of receiving your gearbox, we shall give you a full professional inspection report and suggestions for your rebuild. These are to suit various budgets from low to high. You will then decide on the option you would like and pay the balance. Your box will be built to your specifications and shipped to you with a build report for your records. All shipping is insured.

The service includes the standard Syncro rebuild service plus TDI essentials kit and  GT gears plus new 1/2 gear and 3/4 synchronising units 3/4 hubs and a new VW reverse gear.

Rebuild charge.
Case preparation. including intensive cleaning and re-tapping and cleaning all threads.
Engineering work and fittings, including re-boring and re-sleeving of the case for the 1st & 2nd relay lever, and fitting of the main shaft bearing stop plate to prevent the main shaft from moving forward in the case.
New Parts. I only use the best quality parts for rebuilds these are constantly tested by me for quality and best price. These parts are sourced from all around the world where possible I use original VW or OEM parts where possible.

If your gearbox is broken you may need other items such as a new Crown and Pinion or gears etc which we can discuss if  needed

Painting of your gearbox with etch primer,  high build 2K primer  and topcoat of your choice of colour included in this cost,.

It is advised that you replace your gear linkage when getting your gearbox rebuilt, linkage kits are available here
Slots are on a first-come-first-served basis. We generally aim for a turnaround time of a month from receipt of your box but this can sometimes be longer depending on parts availability and the machine shop. Until we inspect your box it is very hard to say but as stated earlier within about 2 weeks of receiving your box. We shall be able to give you a more accurate quote.
